Design
The Acer Predator 15 G9-593 features a bold and aggressive gaming design with angular edges. It is a mixture of black and red accents which gives it a typical gaming laptop look. The bezels are a bit larger as we used to see in older laptops.
The laptop seems to be sturdy and solid. The back is simple and subtle with just a predator logo and two red lights on the left and right each.
Acer calls this material soft touch. On the other hand, the heat wends on the bottom are in red color which gives this laptop an eye-catching black and red pattern. Talking about the material on the back side it’s high-quality material plastic that gives a rubbery feel.
If you have ever seen rugged plastic on the phone cases you will find it similar. Due to its rugged design, it works as a fingerprint magnet.
On the bottom side, there are large vents for cooling. The air vents themselves have a honeycomb-like design that gives this machine a unique and eye-catching look. Overall the design is pretty is pretty impressive. The red and black mixture gives this a perfect gaming look.
Display
The laptop offers a 15.6-inch IPS display with a refresh rate of 60Hz. The display is good enough to provide vibrant colors and wide viewing angles. The Full HD resolution gives sharp and detailed visuals for the most part. The colors are accurate as you expect from a high-quality panel. The display has a matte finish on it so minimum reflection will reach your eyes.
Whether you watch content or play games you will find the display to be good in most cases. This laptop also supports g-sync The concern here is that it doesn’t support a high refresh rate. One of the reasons may be this laptop is a bit older. So if you are a hard-core gamer then you will get a little disappointed with a 60hz screen. If a high refresh rate doesn’t bother you then it will serve you well.
Performance and Cooling
The Acer Predator 15 G9-593 is bundled with an Intel Core i7 7700hq processor. Additionally, it has an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card with 6GB of dedicated VRAM for gaming purposes. This combination makes sure that you get smooth and lag-free gaming experiences for the most part. The processor works well with all the daily tasks and applications. Thanks to high RAM availability, multitasking also has no issue on this machine.
Not just light usage it works fine with moderate level tasks also. For instance, it can play most games at HD resolution while providing around 75 to 120 FPS. For instance, we tried multiple games with the first one being Overwatch where we got 112 average FPS.
After that, we tried battlefield where we went aloud 70 average FPS which is great. Even in more demanding games, it can give around 40-50 FPS.
The same thing happens with video editing as well. If you edit videos up to full HD resolution, it works without any issues. In contrast, the issue occurs when you play games in high settings. It starts lagging and dropping frames here and there. While in video editing it starts to struggle if you edit 4k videos on it.
You may think the GPU isn’t the latest in this one or the best than how it is performing so well for the price. This is because the heat management on this laptop is just insane. Often we see that many great specs-packed laptops underperform due to bad heat management. Luckily that’s not the case here.
It has one the best heat management in a laptop. Even after running heavy apps and games, this stays cool. Overall the heat management is simply impressive.
Connectivity
Since we have talked about the performance part, let’s check its connectivity. It does have a lot of ports. On the left side, it has 2 USB 2.0 ports 1 audio jack,1 headphone jack 1 SD card slot, and a DVD slot which is rare these days. Here you need to know that the DVD slot gives 2 in one functionality. You can swap this slot with a cooling fan. If you are a general user, you may not need to do this. The cooling on the bottom side will get the job done.
On the counterpart, if you are a hardcore gamer then you may need to swap this with a cooling fan.
Just like the left side, the right side is also filled with a lot of ports. At first, you get a display port, then a HDMI and ethernet port. That’s not all you also get 2 more USB 3.0 ports and a USB type-c 3.0 port.
Overall the laptop is filled with ports. You get all the essential ports you need. The only port missing here is Thunderbolt. It would have been great if we got that. If we neglect this, there is nothing to complain about connectivity.
Keyboard and Trackpad
The Acer Predator 15 g9-593 (GTX 1060) has a great-quality keyboard. It has RGB lighting in it that you can customize through settings. The keys are large and comfortable to type on. At the moment these keys feel like mechanical keys even though they are not.
The keys may feel a bit plasticky sometimes compared to competitors offering a rubbery texture. But that does not change the fact that it has an excellent keyboard.
The key travel is 2.55 which is pretty good. There are four zones where you can control the lighting of the keys. However, they are a bit less as compared to its competitor MSI R15. Also, these keys don’t come with a per-key RGB feature. Which means you can’t control the lighting of the keys individually. However, it is not a big content since you have 4 zones where you can customize colors.
It has a large size touch area that offers smooth gestures. Talking about the touch area it has the size of 4 * 2.5 inches. The gestures work great without any issues.
Below the touchpad, two physical buttons work as left and right click. If your work needs stuff like using a trackpad often, you will surely like this. Overall the trackpad is among one of the best that we have come across.
Sound Quality
For sound output, it has two front-facing speakers that are reasonably loud. Additionally, there is a subwoofer below that boosts volume levels further. The speakers in this machine are one of the loudest in the segment. You will the loud sounds if you watch content too often or play games without headphones.
The only issue it has is that once you reach certain volume levels it starts to lose sound quality. You will notice the muddiness in the sound. So to enjoy the sound, you must set the volume levels below 70 percent. Otherwise, you will notice the distortion in the sound.
Memory and Storage
The Acer Predator 15 g9-593 offers generous memory options. For instance, you get up to 64GB of DDR4 RAM, enabling seamless multitasking and efficient performance. If you open the back side you will see that there are 2 RAM slots. There are 2 more RAM slots but you can’t change them. You only have the option to do modifications in the first 2 slots.
Behind this, there is an SSD slot that you can upgrade, if you want more storage which is SATA, not pcle. Therefore the read and write speed may be a bit slower compared to a PCIe SSD. In our test we found that it gets a reading speed of around 558 MB and a write speed is around 360 Mbps. Below the SSD slot, you get a HARD disk drive. Which has an average read and write speed of 133mb.
Battery Life
The Battery life on this laptop is decent as we usually see on gaming laptops. Nothing really exciting. You will get around 4 hours of battery life if use casual apps. For instance, listening to music, surfing the browser, and working on docs. On the other hand, it drops significantly if you do heavy gaming. Hence we recommend using it while plugging in for best performance.
